Thanks for this video! I’m kinda new to photography and very new to macro photography. Had some hard times using my flash though. I’ve got a Pentax k200d with a nice external flash but P-TTL makes all my pictures too dark. M mode works but isn’t really very speady to work with…Is it normal that TTL makes all the pictures underexposed(when shooting in macro)?

I think the pictures at the end should state which technique you used earlier to produce that photo. Other than that, fantastic video!

The small soft box is made by LumiQuest. Tey have several sizes…I’m using the Big Box. It’s very light and super easy to attach with the velcro system they provide…try it, you’ll like it…..don
You are so creative. I love the effects you achieved. Your softbox looks custom made. It looks like a plastic lens with a material covering, maybe using velcro? I would love to know how you made that. It looks lite weight. Thanks. Kathy

I don’t use anything nearly as close to the gear that you just saw in this Macro video. What I use is this:
Canon SLR with a 50mm 1.4 lens. I attach a Kenko Extension tube to that lens. I usually use the 20mm tube to suit my taste.
And thats it!…if you want to see what I’m talking about, just click on “salpedi” and then go to all my Macro slideshows.
And I do most of my Macro shooting in my backyard patio on a table with the flowers.

No, not at this level.
My setup for Macro Photography is even heavier than Don´s, a Sony Alpha 700 & 900 Body with a Sony 70-200mm f/2.8 SSM G Lens (much more flexible than fixed-focal macro lenses) with Kenko Adaptor Rings and two Flashes (HVL-Sony HVL-F58AM and HVL-F56AM), both with a Lumiquest Softbox on it.
The first pic was overexposed but nice pics.
I really like the idea of back lighting the flowers.

I love macro, I love nature, but having to carry so much gear with you in the wild just puts me off. Will it ever be possible to do great macros with less gear?
Hi Don, thank you for sharing your technique with us. What is this “softbox” you have over your flash ? I bought one for my flash, but it is a hard plastic piece that slides over the head of the flash, but this thing you use interests me greatly. Thank you.
